Sr. Soliz Spanish 1 Syllabus and Class Expectations
[email protected] Novato High School
Room 2602
Course Goals and Objectives
The curriculum is based on the World Language Content Standards for California Public Schools. Classes will be taught mostly in Spanish, with clarification in English. Students will engage in simple conversations, express opinions, make requests, and obtain/provide information in Spanish related to level appropriate topics. Students will demonstrate comprehension of both written and spoken language on familiar topics in the context of the past, present, and future. Students will also be introduced to the similarities and differences between their own cultures and those of the Spanish speaking world. See the link below for information on the alignment of the National Standards for Learning Languages with the Common Core State Standards
http://www.actfl.org/news/reports/alignment-the-national-standards-learning-languages-the-common-core-state-standards
Methods
This class will use a strategy called TPRS ( Teaching Proficiency Through Reading and Storytelling) which is a highly successful, research-based, strategy that follows natural language-learning patterns. We emphasize understanding and internalization of natural patterns before we expect students to proficiently produce spoken or written language.
Texts and Supplementary Materials

This textbook will be issued to each student and will be used as a reference, for some homework assignments, and for reading at home. One short novel will be selected for additional reading each semester beginning with Carol Gaab’s Nuevo Houdini in the fall. Each student will have access to a class copy of these novels for use in the classroom, however, It is highly recommended that each student purchase a personal copy of this book which is available for $6 at http://tprstorytelling.com/

There is always homework. The vocabulary list is an ongoing homework assignment which continuously grows throughout the semester. In addition to the vocabulary list there are other assignments that you will be responsible for. Homework is expected to be turned in on time. Half credit is given for late homework regardless of how late it is, however, I will periodically announce cut of dates for turning in late homework. Once these dates have passed no late homework will be accepted.
Tardy and Absence Policy
Students must be in their seat with paper and pen/pencil when bell rings. Students must also begin warm up activity within one minute or they will be marked tardy.
